The USB DC Power Module serves two purposes in your Gadgeteer application. Firstly it powers your mainboard and your attached modules, delivering 3.3V and 5V outputs. Secondly it connects your mainboard to your computer for easy deployment and debugging using Visual Studio.
The module's smart power controller IC automatically detects the presence of an auxiliary power supply via the DC barrel jack, switching over from the USB power when one is detected. This means your large current draws for demanding modules such as the Relay Module can be sourced from this auxiliary supply rather than straining your computers USB port.
This module's power controller has a helpful unique feature - which is to inform the user via an event inside your application if the power source changes! Useful if you want to activate a high power LCD screen but are unsure if your application can source the required current. You could also turn off outputs such as relays should your DC input become unplugged and you are only running on USB.
The module can deliver up to 1A of current, shared between the 5V and 3.3V outputs when powered by an auxiliary supply between 7 to 9 volts. Take care not to overload the module by supplying more volts than is specified.
